The Camarote Expresso 2222 and the encounters in Bahia’s Carnaval

Gilberto Gil’s manager and wife, Flora Gil affectionately dubbed the place in Salvador as “Gil’s Carnaval house.”

A house for the party

The Camarote Expresso 2222, a VIP box, appeared in 1998 as a privileged extension of Gilberto Gil’s house in Salvador, capable of welcoming friends, personalities, and fans who would not fit in the house where he spends his summers.

A sort of headquarters supporting the circulation pre-Trio Expresso 2222, his music truck—welcoming the artists invited to run through the Barra-Ondina circuit in Salvador—,the VIP box turned into one of the most sought-after places of the Carnaval party.

Invitations are hard to get and there is a spontaneous affluence of a veritable who is who of politicians, big media names, businesspeople who are not usually under the spotlight and the national and international entertainment business people coming in droves.

The pilgrimage of personalities to the box started with no less than King Carl VXI Gustave, sided by Queen Silvia, from Sweden.

The royal couple visited the box one year after its opening under the current concept, as we know it, on 2000, and when both the box and the music truck, which first originated it, were called Chame Gente.

The Oceania Building

The trendy start, and Flora Gil’s dedication in turning the space into the glamour epicenter of the Bahia party, made celebrities flow to the box. Placed by the sea front, in the so-called Dodô Circuit—which goes from Farol da Barra all the way to Largo de Ondina—, where the main stars of Salvador’s Carnaval parade through, Camarote Expresso 2222 made its first house in the Oceania Building, up until 2007, when it moved on to another spot within the same circuit. In 2016, the box went back to its original spot, always keeping the glamour of being the pilgrimage converge point for the celebrities, onlookers, and fans, who annually attend the Salvador party.

The party glamour

The traditional Oceania Building, first base of the Expresso 2222

The Oceania Building was handpicked: the view from the balcony would reach the holding area of music trucks waiting to parade. There, celebrities would line up, ranging from American manager and musical producer Quincy Jones, in 2006, the Midas of artists such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Tony Bennet; to Bono Vox, U2 lead singer, who, in that same year, went with his band to Salvador just to check what Bahia’s Carnaval had to offer.

Unusual encounters

In 2006, after a welcome dinner at the Gil’s old house, in the Horto Florestal neighborhood, Bono Vox, wearing his trademark cowboy hat, duetted with singer Ivete Sangalo while she was passing by the box, up on her music truck.

Bono and Ivete sang “Céu da boca”—famous for the chorus “chupa toda”—a song that Gil sang in duet with the Bahia-born pop star during the shooting of her DVD MTV Ao Vivo – Ivete Sangalo, in the Fonte Nova stadium, Salvador, in 2003.

Up on the truck was also singer Preta Gil, Gilberto Gil’s daughter. No one, be it in the VIP box or on the ground, believed what they saw: the unusual duet of Ivete and Bono was in all the newspapers and in the minds of partygoers.

Religious guest

The archbishop emeritus of the Anglican Church and Peace Nobel Prize winner, South-African Desmond Tutu, was also in Salvador, in 2007, as a special guest. Said Bishop Desmond Tutu, back then:

“Carnaval in Bahia is wonderful! It is beautiful to see people of different races united by music and dance. Everyone turns into one!”

International and national Gil

Other political personalities, in addition to Desmond Tutu, have flown to Camarote Expresso 2222 in that same year—perhaps because it was Gilberto Gil’s final year ahead of the Ministry of Culture in Brazil.

The “ministarstist,” as he liked to be called, left the chair at his own request in 2008, and, since he was still in the office in 2007, several state ministers from the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government attended the Expresso 2222, including executive secretary at Ministry of Culture [MinC, in the Portuguese acronym], Juca Ferreira.

Public figures

In 2003, Humberto Costa, minister of Health, had the full tour and went up on the music truck Expresso 2222 especially to promote the AIDS prevention campaign during Carnaval, sided by Gil and singers Toni Garrido, Sandra de Sá, and musician Armandinho.  Also that year, Walfrido dos Mares Guia, the Minister of Tourism, followed in the footsteps of the Minister of Health.

And moving on with the list of public figures, there were Jacques Wagner, then-Bahia state governor, who took with him Eduardo Campos, former governor of Pernambuco state; then-governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral, had to share the box with his political rival, Denise Frossard, who had run against him for the office. Yet both of them attended with the same goal: to watch from the balcony as the Expresso 2222 music truck crosses the circuit. As peaceful as it gets, as the democratic manners of the place dictate.

Celebrities parade

Known for having a close relationship with Brazil and Bahia and owner of a house where the must-go New Year’s Eve parties take place in Itacaré (south of Bahia), British supermodel Naomi Campbell stopped by the VIP box in 2008, when the place celebrated its 10th year.

The offspring of Jamaican reggae myth Bob Marley, one of Gilberto Gil’s idols, was represented in the Camarote Expresso 2222 in two occasions.

His son Ziggy Marley has been to the VIP box in 2011, when the party theme was the old Carnaval parties. The year after, his brother Rohan Marley was there with hosts Gil and Flora, accompanied by his fiancée, Isabeli Fontana.

When meeting Gilberto Gil, Rohan bowed. “I am loving this. The city is beautiful and the energy of the people is out of this world. Isabeli, my fiancée, invited me to come and I said yes at once,” said Rohan to Glamurama website, by journalist Joyce Pascowitch.

Youtubers

YouTube influencers also paraded on Expresso 2222, such as the Rabello family, from Paraíba, who gave origin to the meme of a girl called Luiza, who went to Canada. On Carnaval Tuesday in 2012, all of them were there, including Luiza. Another super hit of the content platform, South-Korean singer Psy—who, with “Gangnam Style,” was the first world-class artist to hit a billion views on YouTube, in 2012—toured with Expresso 2222 on Carnaval Friday in 2013.

Whether the guest would really come to the VIP box, or whether it was going to happen on that day were among the most kept secrets in the history of Expresso.

He did go, stayed at the Varanda Elétrica, as the balcony is called, and, from there, duetted with singer Claudia Leitte, going to her music truck afterwards, in a special appearance. His visit was as meteoric as his rising: by the end of 2013, there was the achievement of his music video, but his music and career have disappeared.

Stage for friends

The diva singers of the Bahia party, Margareth Menezes and Daniela Mercury, have been at the VIP box countless times, doing duets, special appearances or just a visit to enjoy the perks of the space.

Singer Toni Garrido, who Gil treats like a son, and singer Elba Ramalho have also been to Expresso 2222 in several occasions.

The Rio de Janeiro samba school Grande Rio had also been to Expresso 2222; along with Zeca Pagodinho and Alcione, it paid homage to the samba rhythm, the VIP box’s theme in 2007; senator Aécio Neves, who was in the middle of the run for the presidential office in 2014 and yet visited the space along his Salvador’s mayor and friend, ACM Neto, taking the opportunity to break the news that his wife, Letícia Weber, was pregnant with twins. The list goes on: Bahia-born actor Luís Miranda, filmmaker Andrucha Waddington, actors Marisa Orth and Carolina Dieckmann (the latter being one of Preta Gil’s best friends), football player Ronaldo Fenômeno, actor Selton Mello, model and actor Luiza Brunet… among many others, who compose the myriad of Brazilian and world cultural diversity of which the host is so fond.
