Cold weapons and armors

In the weapons collection of the Lviv Historical Museum, out of 4,600 pieces of weapons, more than 3,400 are monuments of cold weapons and armors. Some of them are presented in 3D format.

Stiletto (1615/1650) by UnknownLviv Historical Museum

A German Stiletto of the XVII century

Stiletto is a small dagger with a long slender blade and needle-like point. The wave blade may evoke in museum visitors the idea of "feminine cunning."

Sports Cossbow, made in the early XIX century

 The crossbow tiller is decorated with two images of monsters with a dog's head and snake's body and numerous rectangular and round insertions of different sizes and undulating ornaments.

The Court Sword made during the reign of King Louis XVI

This type of weapon quickly replaced traditional swords. Court Swords (or Rapiers) were easier to fight with, and, at the same time, they served as a symbol of high status.

Mace of the XVI century from Poland

The mace is a cold, blunt weapon used to deliver powerful strikes and a symbol of power in some countries.  It is impressively decorated: the mace is finished with precious stones and gold.

The shield is made of vines by an unknown Tatar craftsman. Later, it was decorated by Lviv master-jewelers.

Reiter's protective armor of the late XVII century

Reiters (from German – "rider") were mercenary heavily armed cavalry. The armour consists of a breastplate, backplate, spaulders, arm protection and a helmet.

German "morion" helmet of the XVI century

Morion is a Renaissance type of open helmet for infantry. Its design allowed soldiers to aim better when firing.

Italian "burgonet" helmet of the XIX century

The ceremonial Italian helmet of the "burgonet" type combines the spirit of the Middle Ages and Antiquity. The original of the XVI century is deposited in the Vienna Imperial Zeichhaus in Austria.

Leonard Gerle’s Canon (1544/1572) by Leonard GerleLviv Historical Museum

Leonard Gerle’s Canon of the mid-XVI century

In 1544 a master founder named Leonard Gerle arrived in Lviv from the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. For 28 years, the master made cannons, cannonballs, bullets of various calibres.  The cannon you see was cast in the middle of the 16th century.

Flintlock Riffle (1710/1750) by UnknownLviv Historical Museum

Flintlock Riffle from XVI century India

The rifle has a shock flintlock mechanism, resembling the Spanish-Moorish type: the flint is straight; the trigger is ornamented.  Such rifles are called blunderbuss (calibre 34,4 mm), and this particular one came from East India.

Revolver Eugene Lefaucheux's system

It was made in Paris in the second half of the 50s of the 19th century.  The French army adopted the 1853 model of this revolver.  The weapon is decorated with etched floral ornaments.

Hunting Rifle from beginning of the XVIII century

The creator of this rifle, Peter Paul Heffele, worked in Prague from the end of the 17th century. In 1712-1719 he was a master of the so-called of the Werner manufactory, where he sporadically produce rifles with his signature. The last mention in the documents refers to 1727.

Light hand-held machine gun of the interwar period. Made in Czechoslovakia  (Zbrojovka Brno). Model of 1926, modification of 1930. Calibre 7.92 mm, length 1 m 18 cm, weight - 9 kg.

German Maschinengewehr machine gun - adaptation in 1915 of the MG08 model. Caliber 7.92 mm, length - 1 m 40 cm, weight - almost 18 kg.
