The sculpture garden was built on a natural wetland which was rehabilitated while the museum was under construction. A winding pathway from the atrium leads you to artworks hidden around each corner.

Previously featured as part of our Why Should I Hesitate. Sculpture. William Kentridge exhibition, this monumental bronze has been permanently positioned in our garden. Kentridge is known for his theatre work, as well as his drawings and animations.

Edoardo Villa was an Italian artist brought to South Africa as a prisoner of war. Constructed from solid 20mm thick steel, this was the largest steel work produced in the continent at the time, and was commissioned for the Rand Easter Show in 1959.

The first of many monumental installations by Kentridge, World on its Hind Legs makes strategic use of the positioning of the viewer to create the distinctive image of the globe resting on two pylon legs.
