Double-portrait with a glass of wine, Marc Chagall

Chagall paints himself in a strange position perched on his wife's shoulders, floating in the sky. This groom's joy and delight are clear to see as he laughs and raises his glass of wine in a toast.

Bella is painted in a white dress.
Her large open eye shines with emotion and love and her wide smile lights up her face.

The background shows Vitebsk in Belarus: Chagall's hometown and the place where he married Bella in 1915. This work dating from 1917 is a tribute to their union.
