It is widely believed that his profile and illustrious career as a brilliant and charismatic leader, which was seen as a challenge to the then political establishment, led to his assassination.As a renowned trade unionist, politician and statesman, Tom Mboya joined active politics in 1957 when he successfully contested and won a seat in the Legislative Council, and later in 1958 when he founded the Nairobi People’s Congress Party. He was later instrumental in forming the Kenya African National Union (KANU) that formed the government upon independence, and became its first Secretary General. The Family Man

Aside from being a national figure, Tom Mboya was a husband to Pamela Mboya (the daughter of a politician, Walter Odede) and a father to five children; Maureen Odero, Susan Mboya, Lucas Mboya and twin brothers Peter (died in a 2004 motorcycle accident) and Patrick (died aged four).After Tom's death, Pamela had one child, Tom Mboya Jr., with Alphonse Okuku, the brother of Tom Mboya. Tom Moya was a prominent Kenyan trade unionist, educationist and Pan Africanist and held political positions. He was the Member of Parliament for Nairobi Central Constituency (today: Kamukunji Constituency).

Tom Mboya in Government

Tom Mboya became Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and later Minister for Economic Planning and Development. His Spirit Lives On

Tom Mboya is buried in a mausoleum on Rusinga Island which was built in 1970. A street in Nairobi is named after him and is commemorated by the Tom Mboya Monument.
