The Hong Kong-based independent curator presents an exhibition on Filipino experimental composer José Maceda incorporating his research and materialsourced from AAA’s The Chabet Archive.
15 INVITATIONS for 15 Years
A special programme series featuring exhibitions, projects, written works, performances, a blog, andpublication marking Asia Art Archive's 15-year anniversary. AAA extends 15 Invitations to creativepractitioners to look within and beyond the organisation as an archive, a collection of material, adigital platform, and a node in a wider collective network. The 15 Invitations take various sizes,forms, and directions—literary, polemic, political, sonic, physical, and digital—and function as aseries of 'drop pins' to alternatively navigate where AAA originated and where it may be going.
UDLOT-UDLOT
Hong Kong-based curator INTI GUERRERO presents his research on the work of Filipino experimental musician and composer JOSÉ MACEDA (Philippines, 1917–2004). The AAA library exhibition includes archival and audio visual materials on Maceda, as well as works, short films, and artifacts by PIO ABAD, ANAND PATWARDHAN, JAN ŠVANKMAJER, and KOKI TANAKA to contextualise the concepts behind two major Maceda compositions including UDLOT–UDLOT, a 1972 large-scale sound performance documented in AAA's The Chabet Archive.
AAA Collection | The Chabet Archive
Initiated in 2008, THE CHABET ARCHIVE is a collection of digitised material on the renowned Filipino artist, teacher, and curator ROBERTO CHABET (1937-2013). The Archive includes Chabet's personal photographs of his work, letters, writings, and exhibition notes, clippings from books, newspapers,and magazines, and invitations from the 1960s to the present, donated by Chabet himself, other artists, institutions, galleries, collectors, and friends of the artist. The project Archive was launched in July 2009, and will gradually be made accessible through the Collection Online.
José Maceda (1917-2004)
Filipino composer and ethnomusicologist, Maceda investigated various forms of music in Southeast Asia, producing numerous papers and composing his own pieces for Southeast Asian instruments.
Koki Tanaka (b. 1975)
KOKI TANAKA is a mixed-media artist who uses video and found objects to create iconic reflections of everyday life. Combining humour with social criticism, he manipulates everyday objects in their surroundings, releasing them from their utilitarian function to create an entirely new meaning.
Jan Švankmajer (b. 1934)
JAN ŠVANKMAJER is a Czech filmmaker and artist whose work spans several media. He is a self-labels as a surrealist and is known for his influential animations and feature-length films.
Anand Patwardhan (b. 1950)
ANAND PATWARDHAN is an Indian documentary filmmaker known for his socio-political, human rights oriented films.
