Since the early years of the colonization in Mexico, in the 16th century, homes were established to give shelter to Mestizo girls, who were the product of relationships between the Spanish conquerors and indigenous women and left abandoned on the streets of the cities.

In the 17th century, responding anew to the needs of a defenseless female population, similar institutions were founded with the intention to receive Mestizo girls and widows in need of protection.
