A Fine-Tuned Friendship
Gil's friendship with Milton Nascimento is a long-standing one. In the 1960s, Gil would often bump into the singer-songwriter from Minas Gerais backstage at music festivals. Later, they started attending each other's concerts.

Milton and Ronaldo Bastos' song Fé Cega, Faca Amolada was included in the set list for the Doces Bárbaros show, featuring Gil, Caetano, Gal, and Bethânia in 1976.
In 1995, they both appeared at the Copacabana New Year festivities—the biggest event held on Rio de Janeiro's most famous beach. They performed alongside other names like Gal Costa, Paulinho da Viola, and Chico Buarque, singing classics by the great Brazilian composer and songwriter Tom Jobim.

But it was not until the year 2000 that Gil and Milton cemented their friendship with an album.

They finished recording in October that year and the album Gil & Milton was released on the Warner Music record label. The album included rerecordings of some of their old songs, such as Milton's Canção do Sal, Milton and Fernando Brant's Ponta de Areia, Gil's Palco, and Gil and Nana Caymmi's Bom Dia.

Five of their cowritten songs also feature on the album: Lar Hospitalar, Duas Sanfonas, Dinamarca, Trovoada, and Sebastian, which was the album's main track.

The album also includes cover versions of songs written by the Argentinian rock musician Fito Páez, Dorival Caymmi, Jorge Ben, the ex-Beatle George Harrison, and Luiz Gonzaga, among others.

The pair did a joint concert tour in November and December 2000 and, in January the next year, Gil and Milton performed together at the 3rd Rock in Rio Festival, which had returned to Rio de Janeiro after a 10-year hiatus.
The friendship continued over the years, and one of the memories highlighted by Gil is that they both started their careers playing the accordion, an instrument they left aside and, together, rescued for the greatest of the works they did together.
