Private Devotion

This panel painting, created for private devotional use, shows the Virgin Mary after being brought the message of the Annunciation.

Her sensitively depicted facial and bodily expression render the emotional state of the outwardly calm Virgin Mary palpable.

The artist Antonello da Messina, who came from Sicily also profited with regard to painting techniques from his extensive knowledge of Netherlandish painting.
