The National Monument is 132 meters high. It is located in the centre of Merdeka Square, in Central Jakarta, and it symbolizes the fight for Indonesia's independence.
The monument has a 45-meter square platform, at a height of 17 meters, called the goblet yard. On top is a 115-meter obelisk.
The obelisk itself is clad with Italian marble and is topped by a flame, covered with gold foil.
The towering monument reflects the philosophy of Lingga and Yoni, which symbolize harmony and balance.
MONAS was officially opened to the public on the 12th of July, 1975. Visitors can ride the lift to the top of the monument.
The viewing platform is at a height of 115 meters above ground level. The observatory can accommodate up to 50 people and allows visitors to see all of Jakarta.
MONAS is topped by a 14.5 ton sculpture known as the "Flame of Independence." The obelisk and the flame symbolize the struggle for freedom by the Indonesian people.
