What are models for?
Models have been made since modern times to promote Japan’s architectural culture overseas and for educational purposes. They also served as tools to keep track of changes made to historic buildings.

The model of the exemplary abbot’s quarters was made after the main hall was taken apart for repairs in 1959-62. Its famous partition paintings were reproduced by printing photos on paper.

The original is the world’s oldest wooden structure from the 7th century. A 1/10 scale model was made before the pagoda went into repairs during the Showa era (1926-89).

A model of the oldest triple gates of a Zen temple from the Muromachi period (14th-16th century). The model was made after major repair work of the original in 1978 to illustrate its unique structure.

Imanishi Family Residence (Nara Pref.)
A designated important cultural property located in Kashihara, Nara Pref. The white plaster and castle-like feature of the exterior are noteworthy. The model of the exemplary merchant house was made after the building was taken apart and repaired in 1961-62.

How are models made?
Blueprints of the old buildings are made based on actual measurements, from which patterns are made to produce the models. Miniature planes and other handmade tools are used to make the models.
