Mosaic of Eros (82/96)Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo

Archaeological interventions documented a luxurious building in the city of Castulo, intentionally demolished at the end of the first century CE. In the north side of this building was large room, around 70 square meters, paved with a mosaic.

The destruction of this building, and the fact that it wasn't built over until several centuries later, has allowed this mosaic to be preserved in an exceptional state.

The floor covering this great room, studied and interpreted by Dra. Guadalupe López Monteagudo, is framed by a border of black and white birds and aquatic plants.

The central emblem of the room consists of two central circles, surrounded by six half-circles, and four quarter-circle angles. This is decorated with representations of human figures, mythology, nature, and wildlife.

In the corners is a representation of the four seasons, which represents the cycle of life, beginning with the child representing spring...

...the teenager who represents summer...

...an older person who represents autumn...

...and finally an even older woman who represents winter.

The half-circles surrounding the central circles are decorated with six erotes (winged gods) depicting scenes of hunting partridges, pheasants, and hares.
