The beginning of a dream
The virtual exhibition Salesians in São Paulo: 135 years of history presents presents fragments of Saint Francisco Sales Congregation’s hard working in the state, which is related to education, art, music and faith.
The Vincentians had started building a church to allocate the stunning image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, brought from Europe. In September 1883 the Salesians took over the construction, which eventually would have become the Sacred Sanctuary. Part of the church was inaugurated on June 24th 1883, the laying anniversary date of the first stone.

In 1885 the first Salesians priests arrived in the city to develop the second Salesian house in Brazil, named Liceu Coração de Jesus. Responsible for bringing the Salesian family to the city, Dom Luis Lasagna in a letter dated 1883, wrote down to Dom Bosco, the future plans and possibilities for the city.
“Also from São Paulo, a rich and prosperous province from the countryside, they sent me invitations and fervently beg me to come as soon as possible to see with my own eyes what they have already done to the Salesians. Actually, since the end of the last year, the Hon.Mr. Bishop and many zealous priests kept an eye on us, and did their best to get us there.”
Lasagna refers to the workforce started by the Vicentian brothers in 1882, when Mr. Bishop Dom Lino Deodato and a group of friends worked in São Paulo for a Salesian Foundation. On June 5th 1885, the first Salesians, Priest Lourenço Giordano and João Bologna arrived in the city to start their job in the Salesian house.
