Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. He started World War II and oversaw policies that resulted in millions of deaths. 40 million people, including about 27 million in the Soviet Union, died because of him.

The stock market in the United States crashed on 24 October 1929. Millions of germans were thrown out of work and several major banks collapsed. Hitler and the Nazis prepared to take advantage of the emergency to gain support for their party. They promised to follow the Versailles Treaty, strengthen the economy, and provide jobs.

He became Chancellor of Germany in 1933. This appointment was allowed by the German constitution.
