Frida Kahlo, a very talented painter, faced many injuries and illnesses in her lifetime. After overcoming polio as a young child, Frida was impaled by a handrail from an accident she was in with a streetcar and the bus she was on. While recovering from her accident, she began painting again. Many of the paintings in this gallery are from her times recovering in the hospital, and through the paintings you can see just how much pain she was facing in her life.

This painting is after the miscarriage of her and her husband Diego's son. It shows the pain and sadness she was facing.
This painting is of Frida and her nanny from her childhood. It shows the lack of intimacy normally seen between a mother and child during breastfeeding, since in fact this wasn't Frida's mother.

Hoping to have a child, Frida got pregnant and tried to carry her baby too full term. Although this didnt workout because she ended up losing the baby and facing a very dangerous miscarriage.
This painting shows the pain Frida went through following her bus accident. From the steel bar replacing her spine and the nails in her body, you can tell how miserable she was.
This painting is different than the others in that it doesn't show any pain or suffering, but the connection Frida has with nature and animals
