This movement started around the 1940's. I hand picked the items in this showcase due to their colors and the fact that they are all portraying a message. Not only do all of the pictures use a sense of a blurred effect, but they take a lot of thought and meaning in order to be able to interpret and understand what they are. They are all interesting and unique in their own way, but altogether they show various meaning.  The message is conveyed by using lines and various sets of colors to show set a serious, dark, and deep meaning.

John F. Kennedy, Elaine de Kooning, 1963, From the collection of: Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery
In this blurred image of John F Kennedy, the artist was trying to portray an image of a portrait of the president. This painting was made after the assassination of the president. This portrait is not showing emotions, but it is more like a memory of the president, while using primary colors. This piece is important in this showcase because of it's use of primary colors and is almost as a tribute to the great president. The look upon his face has a more serious tone. There is a sense of horizontal and vertical lines throughout the painting.
Merce Cunningham, Elaine de Kooning, 1962, From the collection of: Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery
This piece is conveying a more darker theme. One can tell the portrait is dark due to the color choice that was used, mainly seeing black and various shades of blue. However looking deeper into the blurred photo, one can see that the man in the image is wearing all black which appears to be leotard for men as if he was a dancer. His face is more serious just like the first portrait of John F Kennedy. Just as the first photo there is a sense of vertical and horizontal lines throughout the image.
PH-343, Clyfford Still, 1937, From the collection of: Clyfford Still Museum
This image is by Clyfford Still. In this piece I see a figure that has human characteristics, by showing a hand and a body. The figure appears to be headless, but if you look closely the colors are a mixture of primary and secondary colors. The image is abstract and very deep, it appears unnatural with different geometric shapes. There is no sense of seriousness in this picture but it takes a lot of thought to be able to interpret the piece. The image lacks horizontal lines, but more vertical.
PH-68, Clyfford Still, 1945, From the collection of: Clyfford Still Museum
When one is just looking at this image by Clyfford Still, they can see that there are a lot of different lines as the same as in the previous images. However in this one if you look closely, one can see a rock and figure sitting on top. The figure appears to e pouring out a liquid. Even though we can not see where the liquid is going we can see that the colors are dark and there is a sense of Secondary colors. This image is not sending off a serious message as the precious ones, but more of a unrealistic fairy like figure. This image is more of a vertical line and lacking horizontal ones.
PH-617, Clyfford Still, 1937, From the collection of: Clyfford Still Museum
In this image by Clyfford Still, i can see a sense of darkness but it still has a sense of lines just as the other photos. There is also a sense of lines also seen in all the previous images. In this image there appears to be a bird like figure drinking from a pond in the forest. From the colors, you can see that it is suppose to be dark and twisty. This image has more vertical lining from the twigs in the background.
PH-208, Clyfford Still, 1940, From the collection of: Clyfford Still Museum
In this image there is still a sense of darkness, just as seen in the previous photos. In this image there are splashes of secondary colors. They appear to be a figure in this photo that look like a woman who is there with a lantern. The lines in this image are still here, just like the previous paintings and it is conveying a sense of darkness just like the other images. This image has a sense of vertical and horizontal lines throughout the photo.
Portrait of Artist's Father, Clyfford Still, 1941, From the collection of: Clyfford Still Museum
In this image there is not a sense of darkness like the others, but there is a more serious affect to it. This image is in the showcase due to the color scheme that is being used. The man in figure is focused and is seen as being in a deep concentration. The colors tend to be more calm and settle. Even though the image is calm and not dark it still has a deep meaning just like the previous images. I feel as though this image is lacking the sense of lines.
The Visitor, Sonia Gechtoff, 1960, From the collection of: National Academy of Design
In this image there is a sense of darkness and the colors are a sense of primary and secondary. There figure seems to be a dead animal of some sort, like a phoenix. There are still the horizontal and vertical lines. The image is deep just like the previous ones and it shows a more vulgar approach than the others. The lines are more diagonal then vertical or horizontal.
