As a mother myself, I have seen firsthand the beauty of motherhood.  The bond between a mother and her child is unlike any other relationship in this world.  The joy of motherhood comes in moments and I will present to you a collection of art that exhibits both these moments of joy, but also moments of everyday life and of sorrow, presented in a variety of mediums.

Mother and Child, Nikos Sofialakis, 1947, From the collection of: The Nikos Sofialakis Center of Neoclassical Sculpture
This is a beautiful marble high relief sculpture by Sofialakis. He was known for his very realistic representations of infants, as can be seen here. I included this for its amazing realism.
untitled, C215, 2012/2012, From the collection of: Galeria de Arte Urbana
I wanted to include works with different mediums, and this is the largest stencil piece in Lisbon. It depicts an embrace between a mother and child. I like the availability to the public.
Icon on glass, Unknown, 1800/1899, From the collection of: National Museum of the Romanian Peasant
This is a painting of the Virgin Mary with child, yet this particular painting interested me because it depicts her breastfeeding the infant, a natural, necessary action.
Mother and Child in a Boat, Edmund Charles Tarbell, 1892, From the collection of: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
I chose this painting for its beauty of motherhood in nature. I especially liked the ambiance of the lake and the simplicity of nature. Its a very calm scene and evokes pleasant feelings.
Portrait of Mother and Five Children, Unknown, ca. 1825-1850, From the collection of: Amon Carter Museum of American Art
This painting was chosen due to the larger family subject. Many pieces of art show just one child, or perhaps two, yet this piece presented a family with five children which I felt was more realistic.
Mother of Divine Providence, Unknown, 17th Century, From the collection of: Dionísio Pinheiro And Alice Cardoso Pinheiro Foundation
This piece is a cushioned wood sculpture by an unknown artist out of the Portuguese Baroque period. The colors are typical of the period, with the lady in oranges and green and the child in blue.
Child Born of Famine-Stricken Mother - Age: 3 months, Weight: 3 lbs., Willoughby Wallace Hooper, 1876–1878, From the collection of: The J. Paul Getty Museum
Motherhood is not always beautiful. Famine is real and sadly is common in many parts of the world. This photograph was taken by a British Colonel in India.
Nursing Mother, Nell Dorr, 1940, printed later, From the collection of: Amon Carter Museum of American Art
I included this photograph by Nell Dorr for its simple depiction of a mother in one of their truest forms, nursing an infant.
Mother and Three Children, Elizabeth Nourse, 1906, From the collection of: Cincinnati Museum Center
I wanted to incorporate a drawing. This is a 1906 drawing of a mother and her three young children. I enjoyed the black and white aspect as it gives more attention to the subject matter.
Mother and Child, Nell Dorr, 1941/1945, From the collection of: Amon Carter Museum of American Art
I included another Dorr photograph for its great beauty. I especially liked this photograph of mother and child because I felt a connection to the mother and related to her.
