Nació en París, hijo de una familia noble. No representa la naturaleza como los demás impresionistas, él es un enamorado de París y disfruta observando a sus moradores, en los cafés o en las operas lejos de la luz natural. Podría decirse que Degas representa el impresionismo de interior. No abandona el dibujo, utiliza un dibujo vivo que capta gesto y el movimiento de las figuras. Es un observador nato de la mujer, le gusta captas poses insólitas, naturales e instantáneas.
