Alexander the Great and Campaspe in the Studio of Apelles, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, about 1740, From the collection of: The J. Paul Getty Museum
Alexander the Great and Campaspe in the Studio of Appelles depicts a young painter lustfully gazing into the beauty of Campaspe, his sitter. Surrounded by darker hues, Campaspes’ white and beige garments, and glowing pale skin gives her the focus on the left side of the painting. Contrasting the darker hues with a light blue sky, while, dressing the painter in darker garments, create the focal point on the right side of the painting, giving the entire photo a nice balance and draws your attention between the two young souls.
The Artist's Studio, a real allegory summing up seven years of my artistic and moral life Between 1854 and 1855, Gustave Courbet, 1854/1855, From the collection of: Musée d’Orsay, Paris
The artist’s Studio depicts many people in a huge studio congregated from left and right, surrounding the main object and others. This painting has a dark and wondrous aesthetic, forcing the emphasis to the middle of the room to the only light and its near surrounds (the sky in the painting and the woman that surrounds the artist), yet adding a variety of people around the in the darkness to create balance throughout the picture.
The Art of Painting, Jan Vermeer, 1666/1668, From the collection of: Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien
The Art of Painting represents a painter capturing his subject in a natural lighting, inside of elegant room, hailing various types of art, strategically scattered. Contrasting his black attire with the light bursting into the room while positioning him in the middle of the physical painting gives him the final focal point, while the light bursting on to the lustrous baby blue and pale skin of the sitter gives her the immediate focus.
Musical Angel, Rosso Fiorentino, Around 1522, From the collection of: Uffizi Gallery
Music Angel portrays a young boy with wings, strumming a stringed instrument. The position of his fingers gives the viewer the sense of movement. A dark negative space automatically gives the focal point to the bright and lustrous, golden guitar. Reflections of the young boys face on the guitar as well as the shadow from the angled light gives this painting a warm and peaceful feeling.
The Music Lesson, Gerard ter Borch, about 1668, From the collection of: The J. Paul Getty Museum
The Music Lesson demonstrates a teacher instructing his student in a small personal setting. The angles of the walls give the viewer the sense of real space and dimension. The bright pale skin and elegant, vibrant garments of the woman, contrasting the saturated and darker dressed male, gives her the focus in the picture. Thin smooth lines and shimmering fabrics make for an elegant setting
Sappho and Alcaeus, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, R.A., O.M., 1881, From the collection of: The Walters Art Museum
Sappho and Alcaeus portray a lustful male figure playing a stringed instrument in an open courtyard, while multiple women listen blissfully. The dark color of the instrument, chair and stand against the pale colors of the surrounding objects bring attention the point to the main characters, who are noticeably more saturated in the painting being the sitting woman in the front row and the musician. This is done to show the visual connection between the two.
Cristiano Giuseppe Lidarti and Giovanni Battista Tempesti, Nathaniel Dance RA, 1735–1811, British and Giovanni Battista Tempesti, 1732-1802, between 1759 and 1760, From the collection of: Yale Center for British Art
Cristiano Giuseppe Lidarti and Giovanni Battista Tempesti portray a posed character playing the harp in a small artistically messy environment (instruments and notes on the floor) while a painter in the background paints the main scene. Dark interior surrounds the main object, contrasted with his pale skin and his inner layer. Shadows play a great role in creating a dark and wondrous aesthetic. Physically placing the character in the middle
Six Tuscan Poets, Giorgio Vasari, 1544, From the collection of: Minneapolis Institute of Art
The Six Tuscan Poets paints a colorful, saturated and intimate scene. The combination of sharp and crisp linings and emphasis on the shapes gives this picture a bold look, arranging all objects across the painting making it difficult to find an immediate focal point. The viewer, through the multiple focal points of this painting, feels the sense of movement.
A Bolero Dancer, Antonio Cabral Bejarano, 1842, From the collection of: Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga
A Balero Dancer demonstrates a woman expressively dancing uphill, outside the city and nearby a church, connected to a bridge and surrounded by a body of water. The artist used dark gloomy skies to highlight the women’s pale skin completion; mean while a vibrant pink garment with luscious white trimmings and a gold finish brings the focal point to this artistic dancer. A dark and distant background gives this a real space feel. The sense of movement is felt with her body expression.
Turkish dancer, Styrian painter/Štajerski slikar, From the collection of: Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj- Ormož
Turkish Dancer shows a dancer in movement uphill, in front of distant cities and a body of water dividing the different lands. The distant, visually smaller cities and lands give this picture a sense of three-dimensional space. Though, her pale skin is less saturated, as the backdrop, bolder hues in her garments and headband, draw the viewer eyes to the main object. The artist gave the Turkish dancer a gold outline, as well, to glorify, as well as contrast, the woman’s skin from the skies. This sense of movement is felt through her body language.
