Auks are true acrobats – both in the air and underwater. They can dive to depths of no less than 120 metres in search of lesser sand eels and other fish. And to fly, they flap their short wings incredibly quickly.

Similar to many other seabirds, auks nest in colonies along rocky cliff edges – frequently in the company of common guillemots. They only lay a single egg per nesting season. On rare occasions, auks can also be encountered in the Netherlands, either passing through or wintering along the Dutch coast.
