Byobu of Miyako Mandayu-za Theatre

Painted in the period from the last year of Enpo era to the first year of Genroku era (1678～1690). The view of Miyako Mandayu-za theater in Kyoto after its relocation from the south side of Shijo-doori street to the north side in Enpo 6 (1678). It is a one folding screen with six panels, three panels in the right side show the view landscape of Gion-sha shrine and Shijo-doori street, three panels in the left side show the hustle and bustle in and out of Miyako Mandayu-za theater. It shows the situation of performances in the latter part of 17th century including the stage, barkers in front of the theater, decorations of the signboard, earthen-floored audience seats with no roof and so on.
