The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum,Waseda University

The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University, familiarly known as "Enpaku", was founded in October 1928 to commemorate the 70th birthday of Professor Tsubouchi Shoyo and the completion by him of the translation into Japanese of all 40 volumes of the "Complete Works of Shakespeare", a task to which the Professor had devoted half his life. Since then, Enpaku has been engaged in collecting valuable works relating to the theatre and motion pictures both in Japan and all around the world. About 48,000 nishiki-e (woodblock prints) had already been opened to the public through digital archive since 2001. And about 270,000 theater books are opened to the public in the library.
In addition to about 159,000 pieces of various materials including valuable grand collections before the 19th century, costumes, puppets, letters and manuscripts, an extensive collection itself, containing materials close to a million pieces such as stage stills, theater performance materials (leaflets and programs), audiovisual materials and so on, could be called “the history of the theater” built up in more than 90 years. The building of the Theatre Museum, designed after the model of the "Fortune Playhouse" in London built in the period that Shakespeare lived, was designated as a tangible cultural property of Shinjuku-ku in 1987 (Showa 62).
It also contributes to researchers from a wide range of fields, extending from the theatre and motion pictures to other areas such as literature, history, clothing and construction, and introduces theater culture to the public widely as well.
