The Byward Tower, first floor room, looking towards the decorated Tudor fireplace and 14th-century mural.

The mural was created for King Richard II in the 1390s. The scene is of two saints flanking the Crucifixion, although the central image of Christ on the Cross no longer survives. The mural was painted over, probably in the 16th century, and was only rediscovered in 1953.

A rare and susbtantial fragment of a 14th-century mural that once depicted the Crucifixion of Christ, now more often referred to as 'The Byward Angel'.
