FAVARA, AGRIGENTO
Farm Cultural Park is a private cultural institute, committed to a project of urban regeneration,
social relevance and sustainable development involving experimentation with new ways of living. Farm Cultural Park is part of the recovery project for Favara, a town located 8 km from the Unesco World Heritage site of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. The project grew out of the insight of Andrea Bartoli and Florinda Saieva, a notary and a lawyer who have succeeded in transforming this devastated town into Sicily’s most fashionable urban centre, a factory of cultural and artistic innovation. Their contribution lies in having understood the potential of Favara’s ruined historic centre.
They have not asked for public money, they believe art is a great economic instrument for change and growth. The space, whose original urban fabric was Arab, consists of ruins and whitewashed houses. It is a Kasbah made up of art galleries, exhibition spaces, concept stores and communal places. The white façades provide a sense of unity and cleanliness that stands out magnificently against the surrounding decay. Several small houses have been connected by demolishing the walls, so creating an organic continuous non-hierarchical space open to natural light and free circulation.
