MGM-52 Lance missile

War Memorial of Korea

War Memorial of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

The MGM52 Lance was a tactical ballistic missile deployed with the US Army in 1972 to replace the Honest John rocket and Sergeant ballistic missile. The MGM52 was developed as a means of launching tactical nuclear weapons during the Cold War and could carry not only nuclear warheads but also neutron bombs with enhanced radiation capability. Armed with a conventional warhead, the MGM52 could penetrate reinforced enemy bunkers. The Lance could also carry cluster bombs, which were effective against enemy antiaircraft positions. It was operated not only by the US but also Britain, Israel, the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany. A single battery was deployed with the US Forces in Korea in 1987 as a deterrent to North Korean nuclear weapons but was pulled out of the Korean Peninsula after the Koreas adopted the joint declaration for denuclearization of the peninsula on December 31, 1991.
