Manoel Joaquim Martins was born in São Paulo (SP) in 1911. From 1931, he attended the art classes of the sculptor Vicente Larocca (1892 - 1964). He was also a student of the Pro-Modern Art Society. In 1935, he became a member of the Santa Helena Group and in the following year, he began to share the studio with Mário Zanini (1907-1971). In 1937, he participated in the exhibition of the Família Artística Paulista. He illustrated the book “Bahia de Todos os Santos”, by Jorge Amado (1912-2001), in 1944; that same year, he organized an exhibition with his works and other 80 artists in the Public Library of Salvador, considered the first exhibition of modern art in Bahia. He held his first individual exhibition in 1948, in the Gallery Itapetininga, in São Paulo. Took part in the First São Paulo Biennial (1951). He died in São Paulo (SP) in 1979
