Pedro de Alcântara Francisco António João Carlos Xavier de Paula Miguel Rafael Joaquim José Gonzaga Pascoal Cipriano Serafim de Bragança and Bourbon was the fourth son of Dom João VI and Dona Carlota Joaquina, and became the prince regent of Brazil with the return of the Royal Family to Portugal in 1821. He married in 1817 with Dona Leopoldina of Hapsburg, Archduchess of Austria, who died in 1826. In 1829 he married Dona Amelia de Beauharnais, Duchess of Leuchtenberg. Dom Pedro I founded the Empire of Brazil in 1822, but he abdicated the throne in 1831 in favor of his son Dom Pedro de Alcântara, future Dom Pedro II. He assumed the title of Duke of Bragança and left for Portugal with the purpose of claiming the throne, then occupied by his brother Dom Miguel. After many battles, Dom Pedro was acclaimed the 28th king of Portugal, being there known as Dom Pedro IV. However, seriously ill as a result of tuberculosis, he abdicated the throne in favor of his eldest daughter, who ascended to the Portuguese throne as Dona Maria II. He died in the Palace of Queluz in 1834, in the same place where he had been born 36 years earlier.
