In ukiyo-e prints, there are also examples of figures rendered in summer robes. Here, popular kabuki actors of the Edo period (1615-1868) are shown in their summer robes. In addition to the title of the print “Five Manly Men in Summer Robes,” each actors’ name and role is included. The respective summer robes include elaborately dyed designs such as geese, thunder gods, dragons, and mythical lions, impressively rendered in contrasting indigo blue and white. (right to left) Actors Sawamura Tanosuke III as Karigane Bunshichi, Nakamura Shikan IV as Kaminari Shōkurō, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as An no Heibei, Ichikawa Ichizō III as Hotei Ichiemon, and Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I as Gokuin Sen'emon
