Gachala Emerald Crystal

This uncut crystal weighs 858 carats—huge for an emerald. It is named after the mining district where it was found in 1967. Rarely are crystals of such size and extraordinary color preserved. Usually they are cut into gems. Harry Winston, Inc., donated the Gachala Emerald to the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in 1969.
