One of the most outstanding masters of Dutch local landscape. Born in Naarden, active in Haarlem (1623–1670). His early works show the influence of Esaias van de Velde (1587–1630) and Jan Porcellis (1584–1632). Father of landscapist Jacob Salamonsz van Ruysdael (1629/1630–1681) and cousin of Jacob van Ruysdael (1628/1629–1682). The styles of the three artists are interrelated.
