The painting was created by Waldmüller, a prominent artist of the period of Biedermeier and early Realism. The painter, using his exceptional skill and finesse in depicting reality, made the subject of this work the act of the adoption of a little boy by a wealthy family, combined with the drama of his mother – a poor widow – who is forced to part with her son.
