The artist Konrad Witz is regarded as one of the most important Old German masters. Through his very accurate observation of nature, his paintings appear exceptionally natural and realistic. His work “The Annunciation” is a particularly good example of his skill. Monumental figures, sculptural architecture and surfaces and the dramatic use of light create a realistic and elegant scene, influenced by Dutch art, in which Mary receives the angel’s message. In contrast to other scenes depicting the Annunciation, the viewer’s attention is particularly drawn to the emotional events as a result of the relative emptiness of the surroundings.
