In the 1950s, Alfons Długosz, the founder of the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka, began rescuing those who were threatened by liquidation of chambers, despite the lack of funds and with very modest help from the management of Salt Mine. With the help of miners, he explored underground corridors to obtain mining machines, tools, fossils and other evidence of the history of this place.
