This portrait of an aristocrat breaks away from the traditional rigid pose and distance used previously in such representations. The potentate stands relaxed directly in front of the observer, dressed in a light blue cloak (kontush) with a sash, worn over a light brown kaftan (zhupan), and in yellow boots, armed with a traditional Polish sabre (karabela) – all of which constitute characteristic elements of historical Polish dress.
