Achilles in Skyros

Niccolò Giolfino1530

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

Another unusual subject by Giolfino, who also illustrated stories from classical mythology, is this episode in which Achilles, irresistably attracted to the arms offered by Ulysses, discards the feminine disguise imposed by his mother in her attempt to keep him from participating in the Trojan War. The scene is depicted in a comic vein: the young hero is shown with skirts around his feet and virile attributes flagrantly visible beneath his red underwear.
