During metamorphosis, amphibian larvae shift their breathing apparatus from gills to lungs. Nevertheless, the soft amphibian skin is not just permeable to moisture, but also facilitates gas exchange. For many amphibians, this is responsible for a large part or even the majority of their oxygen intake – the lungless Mexican Mushroomtongue Salamander even breathes exclusively through its skin.
