Ostseebad Ahrenshoop, Germany

Through the Kulturbund, which awarded holiday places for cultural workers in the early 1950s, Elizabeth Shaw and René Graetz and their two children were also given accommodation in Ahrenshoop on Fischland/Darß. In her book "Eine Feder am Meeresstrand" (Eulenspiegel Verlag, Berlin, 1973), the artist described and illustrated her impressions. Numerous drawings created in Ahrenshoop deal with the people who travelled to the Baltic resort for recreation. Artists from all walks of life gathered here, as well as politicians and functionaries. Elizabeth Shaw observed closely and then, with a "pointed pen", amusingly drew the holiday party "undressed" as they strolled along the nude beach, sunbathed or searched for stones. She told little stories and pointedly pointed. The result were excellent little caricatures, which were also used to illustrate the stationery of the "Bunte Stube Post" (1968).
