Den Haag, Netherlands

An army is going to war in a sun-drenched landscape. The classical ruins are reminiscent of the Forum in Rome, but Van der Ulft probably never went to Italy himself, and likely based his painting on prints. The relatively unknown Van der Ulft painted mainly architectural works, with Dutch buildings as well as Italian ones.
