Tri-fold screen, ebony finish, brass hinges, crewel-work embroidered panels (3); deep purple cloth on panels with gold trim (right side panel has black cloth); various designs embroidered onto cloth of birds, some in flight, and trees; primary colors are pink, blue cream, ivory; middle panel is slightly taller than other two and has three small wooden panels at top with trees, flowers and birds carved onto them; back of screen is plain.

  • Provenance: Documentation from the Thomas Donaldson memoirs (dated December 22, 1879) states that Lucy Hayes received the screen at a Methodist fair in Philadelphia in November 1879 but Custer Antiques appraised the screen in 1984 and placed the date at 1876; further documentation states that The Sisters of Mercy at Our Lady of the Pines in Fremont, Ohio did some work on the silk panels in the 1930s.
