Assumption of the Blessed Virgin

Martino Altomonte (originally Martin Hohenberg) is considered one of the founders of Austrian baroque painting.

He shows the Assumption in the three-section structure typical of the Baroque. In the earthly zone, the disciples are gathered round the empty tomb. Above them, surrounded by angels, the Virgin is borne heavenwards towards the Holy Trinity of Jesus, God the Father and the dove as the Holy Spirit. The zones are distinguished by their colouration and the emphasis on lighter or darker areas. While the lower area is painted mainly in warm, earthy shades, delicate pastel tones have been used for the celestial sphere.
