On September 26, 1921, a public tender was concluded and the Army, and commanders and officers of the Civil Guard, were issued the Astra Model 1921 pistol (also known as the Astra 400). It was a regulation firearm in the Border and Coast Guard Corps (Cuerpo de Carabineros), which joined the Civil Guard in 1940, bringing its weapons with it. That was one of the reasons why this model of pistol was in service at the same time as others made by Star for quite a long time after the Spanish Civil War.
