This animation, made from hand-painted canvases, is a love letter to New York City from Ezra Wube, native of Ethiopia. Wube celebrates the power of imagination through this vibrant collection of memories of his daily journey throughout the city.
Says the artist, "To make this animation, I painted scenes from my daily commute from memory and photographed them. Each frame was painted on top of the previous one, each scene triggering the following scene. In my work, I am interested in exploring time, place and memory through the everyday experience. By refusing a concrete representation, I have found the freedom to make art that is consistent with the flux of my life."
Wube created this piece while in residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space.
