Although construction of the City Hall building was begun in 1920, it was only officially inaugurated on 24th June, 1957. Located at the top end of Avenida dos Aliados (Avenue of the Allies), the initial design of the Câmara (City Hall) was made by António Correia da Silva, though subsequently altered by Carlos Ramos (1897-1969). Of particular note are the 70-metre-high central tower, a northern-European style belfry, and the rich stonework that graces the building.
