Kenichi Wada was a Japanese contemporary artist. After graduating from Department or Aesthetics and Art History of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1980, Wada studied techniques of classical paintings and as well as restoration techniques in Rome and Florence for three years. Starting from copying classical paintings in his early career, his style evolved into abstract. In the 1990s, he began to use spray guns instead of brushes and employed tarashikomi, a technique used in Japanese style paintings to add another layer of ink before the first layer is completely dry. While Wada’s style was influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, the theme of his paintings was to create a new light where the intense brightness of the atomic bomb his mother experienced and the brightness of the supreme spirit of Italian Renaissance paintings were overlapped.
The title Atomic Angel 06-16 G.P.P. represents his wish to converge atomic bomb and angels drawn by early Renaissance artist Fra Angelico.
