Augustus and the Sibyl

Giovanni Maria Falconetto (Verona 1468 - Padova 1535)late 15th century

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

This is a rare work on panel by the Veronese painter and architect Falconetto. It reflects a cultural milieu not unlike that of the late period of Liberale, somewhat retardataire in its gothicisms, but it also reveals the antiquarian, archeological and theatrical interests that pervade all of Falconetto’s works. The composition in fact recalls other contemporary attempts to reconstruct a classical stage set.
