Designed principally by the British architect Barry Parker (1867-1947), between 1915 and 1917, Avenida dos Aliados (Avenue of the Allies) was conceived as the city's civic center. This avenue runs northwards from Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square) to Praça do Município (City Square), where the Câmara (City Hall) stands. The initial design, much debated and altered in subsequent years, led to the construction of various buildings with a tertiary function, standing out among which are those designed by Marques da Silva, Rogério de Azevedo and Júlio de Brito. Avenida Aliados boasts a homogeneous array of distinctive architecture.
