Postcard of M. Henri Salmet, ‘The Daily Mail Aviator’ pilot who flew over North Devon to raise awareness of aviation. Organised by the Daily Mail M. Henri Salmet flew a thirteen week tour entitled 'Wake up England' in a Bleriot monoplane. Using a large field at the top of Sticklepath Hill Salmet flew to neighbouring places. Bideford failed to find a landing field and so Salmet decided to fly on to Westward Ho! and found a site on the golf course near the Pebble Ridge Hotel. Once it was announced special trains were arranged to bring spectators, upward of two thousand assembled to watch the aviator put on a display of banking and circling before landing on the golf course.
