Bamberger Psalter, fol.114v-115r (Montage)

After his arrest and trial, Jesus is crucified by the Romans at Golgotha.
With his eyes closed, the crucified Jesus seems to already be dead or near approaching his death. This crucifixion is an example of later images of the Four-Nail Crucifixion that were widespread before the popularization of Three-Nail iconography in the 13th century. The appearance of His suffering, like in Byzantine art, is minimized to the fullest extent.
The trend in High Middle Age iconography was to only show the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist at the foot of the cross, not any of the other soldiers and disciples that also would have been present at Jesus’s death.
