A oil on Canvas painting titled Bamboo (1984) by the South African artist Michael Heyns (b. 1946). The painting has an interesting history. It was donated to a female residence as a decorative piece without being attributed to an artist. When the residence was revamped in 2011 the painting was donated to the University of Pretoria’s Art collection. In 2012 it was decided to clean the painting as it was very dirty due to it hanging in a smoking room in the residence. When it was cleaned the artist signature was found under the dirt and grime. Short Biography: Michael Heyns was born in Potchefstroom in the North West Province in 1946 and obtained his BA Fine Arts Degree from the University of Pretoria in 1967. In that same year he was the winner of the South African Art Association’s New Signatures competition, a competition that is still going strong to this day. Heyns’ works are deeply influenced by music and rhythm.
