It was in the mines where his father worked that Martin Chambi, a descendant of native americans, met photography. Some time later he served as an apprentice, for nine years, of a photographer in the city of Arequipa, after which, he opened his own studio. He photographed for important newspapers and magazines, including National Geographic. As the first indigenous photographer in Latin America, Chambi mainly photographed Peru and its native population.
